Music with Larry | Emmaus Homes

If you happen to be at Spencer Library in St. Peters on the last Tuesday of the month you might just hear clients singing to Elvis, the Beach Boys, and Sonny & Cher just to mention a few of the “oldies”! An idea, a retro record player on wheels and a collection of old 45’s began “Music With Larry” over 12 years ago.

“Larry” is Larry Buxton, a kind, gentle hearted man who began volunteering with Emmaus in 2004. “When I was in my twenties, I was a driver for United Cerebral Palsy,” he reflects. “That’s when people with disabilities truly found a place in my heart.” Since his volunteer orientation with Emmaus, Larry has volunteered at numerous parties, activities, making crafts, and taking weekend trips. Today, he remains true to the music program he started in 2006. “It’s not about me, it’s about the clients,” he says. “The clients love to dance and we’ve been doing this for so long, the clients know all of the words!”

Larry is really more than a volunteer, he is a real friend!

“Once I retired, I was looking for a way to volunteer with people. I knew of Emmaus and instantly found my calling here. I’ve helped Larry every month with music for the past 10 years and I love being involved with some of the best people around!” Pete E., Emmaus Volunteer (right)

“In 2003, I was looking for a place to volunteer until a friend mentioned Emmaus and I have volunteered here ever since. I wanted to play music for the clients and when a team member said I could do this every month, I was thrilled to hear about it! Since 2005, I have been hosting sessions playing music for Emmaus clients. I try to keep everything upbeat; I bring 45’s that are lively and many clients that come to my sessions are older so they love to listen and know these songs by heart!” Larry B., Emmaus Volunteer (left)
