Community Services

Emmaus Homes provides programs to help individuals with developmental disabilities develop skills to be as successful as possible in all areas of their lives. To determine areas in which an individual may need assistance and training, the Emmaus Homes’ staff conducts a complete assessment for each applicant in the following areas:

  • Communicating wants and needs to others
  • Using a wheelchair or other equipment to move about freely
  • Choosing and preparing food
  • Using community resources
  • Independently eating food
  • Getting along with others
  • Making purchases
  • Using public transportation
  • Using money
  • Making personal choices
  • Managing time
  • Developing basic work skills
  • Developing hobbies and other interests

Individuals’ programs are built around the skills they need to live as independently as possible within the home, as well as within the community. Although everyone has the ability to learn new skills, people need to develop at their own pace. Hands-on activities are used to reinforce the skills taught. Most importantly, people are encouraged to make good choices that will help them get along with others and develop interests that can lead to meaningful work, volunteer opportunities or leisure activities. Transportation to activities is provided or arranged by Emmaus Homes’ staff.

Application and Cost - People with developmental or other disabilities are often eligible for funding through the Missouri State Department of Mental Health or through other funding sources. Emmaus staff will explain how to apply for funding.
